It’s time again to start on our holiday sewing for this year. Today I will show you a new pattern for a camera case, and talk about some additional patterns with downloads for even more quick gifts. These are all free patterns, and will remain on the blog for you to enjoy. Plus, I am joining a fun blog hop for you to see all kinds of great ideas for your Christmas In July sewing and quilting. There are giveaways too, so lots to do today!
So, we’ll begin with the larger case. I begin by carefully measuring the size of the larger camera in width and height directions, taking care to include the amount needed for the depth. My camera measured out at about 7×8 (going halfway down the sides in both directions to allow for depth). I made a couple of cases, and found that cutting the fabric 10 x 18 inches works well, allowing a bit of ease to get the camera in and out of the bag.
For this size camera, cut fabric for outside, lining and batting to 10 x 18 inches. Go a bit larger if your camera is bigger than mine.
Layer right sides together of the outside fabric and the lining fabric, and add batting layer. Sew all three layers together, leaving an opening for turning.
Clip corners, turn and press.
Topstitch around the entire sandwich, closing the opening.
Place velcro on each short end, placing one on the outside and one on the lining. I like to put the loop side on the inside.
Topstitch the velcro in place.
Turn up the bottom with the velcro on the outside 6 inches.
Stitch the sides.
Turn the bag inside out, and box the corners one inch.
Turn right side out. The camera sits inside nicely…
and the handle will come out the sides at the top for carrying.
For my little camera, the pattern is essentially the same , just smaller and the corners don’t need to be boxed. I measure the camera in the same way, allowing for the depth. The instructions will fit a camera about this size, make adjustments if yours is a bit bigger.
Cut fabrics and batting to 10 x 6-inches. Layer right sides together of the outside fabric and the lining fabric, and add batting layer. Sew all three layers together, leaving an opening for turning. Clip corners, turn and press. Topstitch around the entire sandwich, closing the opening.
Place velcro as shown in the larger case and topstitch. Turn up about 1/3 of the sandwich from the bottom, place your camera on top to check the fit and adjust as needed. Sew the sides.
All done, again the camera fits nicely…
with the handle extending from the case for carrying.

Cute idea for a matching case set! I’m currently getting ready to cut out our Christmas quilt for this year. I’ve used patterns by Doug Leko for the pas 2 years. I also have a Christmas quilt and a patriotic quilt planned for my husband’s aunts.
I’m working on 2 quilts for family members for Christmas.
With the great tutorials and the PDFs of each, everyone is already a winner. I love Christmas fabric. Years ago a friend of mine told me that she wanted a Christmas quilt, so I set to work buying Christmas fabrics in small amounts to make what I thought she might like – a scrappy Christmas quilt. About six weeks later, she told me she had taken a 80 something year old friend shopping to buy the fabrics for the quilt. The friend wanted to make the quilt for her. I put the quilt in a box and stopped on it as I was in poor health and really didn’t feel like working on the quilt. Thanks to you I just remembered it and I need to get it out and work on it. My son has a wonderful girlfriend who loves Christmas. She has two daughters and has taken in not only my son but also his two children. She has stood by him while he has gotten his 13 year old son whose mother has become a drug addict and my son will get permanent custody of him next week – all the papers are signed and the judge just has to sign off. You know she is an angel to go through all the drama that goes with dealing with an addict and a child who is uprooted from his mother and doesn’t know the real reason. The quilt would be perfect for her. The fat quarters would be a fresh start back on the quilt. Thank you for participating in the hop and the great inspiration.
Have been busy here so far this summer with visitors, quilt show, and charity quilts, so now I’m working on UFOs. Don’t know why I have so many! LOL
Thanks for the great tutorial! Your camera case turned out great. We are currently on holiday so am just lusting all the sewing going on!
Nice bag ideas ! I am busy making table toppers to give as gifts, although it’s almost too hot to sew !!
I love your camera tutorials. My plans are to quilt a bird quilt I finished, complete a patriotic quilt to display during Veterans Day since hubby and I are both veterans, and start on my Christmas stitching. July is flying by and still too much to do
Just the tutorial I need for my camera. Thanks so much for it. I love that fabric you used. ‘Have not started sewing for Christmas yet, but I do have some ideas for gifts. Still working on UFO quilts.
What a great idea – this is just what my camera needs!
Nice bags. Love them in matching fabrics.
I love your bags and the great idea for a Christmas gift. I have a granddaughter that is into photography, and this would make a great gift for her. Thanks so much for sharing!!
Your camera bags are really nice. My camera could really use a bag. Thank you for the patterns and pics.
I Think the cases are great. I will download the instructions for gift making. I’m working on a Christmas quilt, which I hope to have finished soon.
Your camera bags are a perfect gift. Right now I am working on piecing graduation quilts.
Tour camera, bag tutorial is right on the spot as usual. It would be adaptable to other kinds of equipment as well. We’re on a 10 day trip so I’m just following the 12 Days of Christmas blog hop. Sewing will need to wait. No specific plans yet, but I probably should get thinking about it.
Pat
Thanks for the great tutorial! Christmas sewing happens any time any day here! Whatever the mood I go with the flow, LOL
I love the matching bags. So cute! I think I will be making them for my daughter.
Great tutorial, Carole! I think I’ll make one for my granddaughter – she’ll love it! Thanks for all your hard work!
I am not entering but wanted to comment
I love your camera bags-very nice-looks like a fun hop
Happy Monday
Thank you for the giveaway. I am always trying to come up with ideas for Christmas gifts and I sew them all year round.
I love the camera bag tutorial and will make one as my case is wearing out. I am working on a few donation quilts right now, trying to use up my 2.5 and 4.5 scraps.
Love your camera bags, thanks for another great tutorial. I LOVE blog hops. I’m working on quilty projects to use around the house. Looking forward to seeing all the Christmas in July ideas! Happy Monday Carole!
I love the fabric choice in your models! I am working on a couple of things for myself currently and have my fabrics picked and sorted out for one Christmas quilt – masculine quilt for my son. This blog hop has already provided me with so many ideas for gifting at this Christmas and I must get busy busy! (btw… I love Christmas novels!) — and like so many of our friends—I too must confess. I have lots of WIPs to complete!
I love the camera case and how you can make it for any size and other things too.
I quilt most days in most years, but this has been a trying year for that. Hoping the last half gets better and I can sew for Christmas before Christmas gets here. LOL
I haven’t used a camera in years. All photos are on my phone or Facebook LOL. I really miss the tangible picture and making albums. Don’t know who will want the several boxes of albums and pictures when we’re gone…..
As for sewing, I like BOMs and Sew Alongs, so I’m “armpit deep” in several of those projects plus working on a leader/ender Project, Quilt of Valor for a friend, Christmas quilts for our kids, and cutting 3 quilts for an upcoming quilt cruise next month. Yes, I’m retired and have a wonderful husband.
I love your camera case idea. As for Christmas, after I finish the quilts for our church camp benefit auction I want to make each of the younger grands a Christmas quilt this year, and if time permits perhaps some new holiday placemats for our table.
That’s a great idea. Thanks so much for the tutorial. It would also make a wonderful phone case.
Great set of bags/pouches. No longer have cameras but do have sun glasses that need protection. I’m currently working on Sarah’s QAL and stuff for another Christmas hop I’m participating in later in the month.
Thanks, Carole, that looks easy enough, I’ll have to make the little camera pouch as I need it for my little Kodak Share camera which I just love because of it’s size. Thanks for sharing your tutorial. I’m currently working on Christmas Tree Skirts that I got the pattern from Craftsy. I’m on my second one now, and when I blog again, which needs to be soon, I’ll be showing my first one. I actually made one for myself and used it last year under my tree and everyone loved it, so some are getting them as gifts this year! Thanks for the giveaway!! You are always so generous!! Have a great week!! I’m following the blog of Sarah’s so hope to begin yet another quilt this week!!
I would use these to make little bags that my friend uses to give toiletry essentials to homeless kids in our high school.
That’s very clever and much cuter than so many! At times like this I wish I sewed!
Great ideas for camera cases, but I must admit I just use my phone and iPad for photo-taking now!
Diligently working on finishing wips, with 20 of 60+ on my list from before the first of 2018 now completed. Loads more projects started this year, too, including quite a few that have been finished.
Not too much Christmas sewing planned here, except for some reusable gift bags, which I will make from Christmas yardage I bought on sale in Jan!
I love your camera bags Carole. The matching fabrics looks fantastic.
I am making 6 inch blocks right now for a sampler quilt. Thank you so much for the giveaway.
I am always making Quilts of Valor year round!! We’ve already awarded 300 this year!! I may try making some slippers for gifts.
Fun projects, thanks for sharing
Some great Christmas present ideas, although I’ve still got a Christmas project to finish from last year
As always, I’ve probably bitten off more than I can chew regarding Christmas gift projects, but right now, I have 3 quilts (one is the Quilt along for the blog hop) and several small sewn projects (microwave bowl cozies, cosmetic bags, etc.) on my agenda. We’ll see if my ambition gets the better of me!
I just bought two of Elizabeth Hartman’s designs; one with swans for my niece and one with dachshunds for my nephew. I’m looking forward to putting them together. I like your cases; they are practical, do the job, and are very attractive. Thanks for the how to.
Carole, thanks for your kind heart and multitude of ideas. I enjoy your blog and the variety of topics.
What a really nice tutorial.
I may make one for my camera, even though I have the case the it came in.
Thanks for the chance to win! I’m going to make my first holiday quilt. A wonky Christmas tree pattern!
Love your projects and fabric colors,
Thanks for the patterns and tutorials. Currently I’m sewing lots of different items, mostly mug rugs and quilts.
your projects are wonderful. thank you for the pdf instructions.
i have been sewing nonstop since last October. So I am taking a month break.
LOL we will see if it lasts
This camera case sure beats my original case it’s so much prettier. I’m going to give this one a try.
Jeri
Carole, OMG the butterfly material is to dream of! It would be beautiful as a quilted jacket to wear in the cold months and make everybody dream of spring and summer. Can’t get over all the extra pockets to hold all your extra items in, you’re so clever.
Phyllis
I’ve got 2 quilts in mind to start. I also need to finish at least 15. I’m doing a little sewing for me this week. Taking king flat sheets we don’t use and turning them into queen fitted for a deep mattress.
What a great bag. If I didn’t have the one Paul bought with his camera, I would definitely make this one. The set you made looks great, too.
This was a great tutorial and a great idea for Christmas. Thank you for all that you give to all of us, your readers. Thank you for the chance to win the great fabrics.
What a great idea, thanks for the excellent tutorial. I am finishing a tree skirt and working on two Santa bags for a friend’s grandchildren. Thanks for the chance to win!
Not sure if I’m going to do any Christmas sewing this year as I’m trying to finish some quilts. I told myself this is the year of finishes and I’ve finished 3 quilts. Thanks for the links to the camera cases and the other cases.
Great ideas for cases. I’m finishing up my projects for my Wednesday for this blog hop. Other than that am continuing to work on UFOs right now. Thanks for the great tutorial!
Fabulous projects. I need a case for my little point and shoot camera. So I will be downloading. Thanks!
Love the projects and thank you for the tutorial! I will be trying the point and shoot camera case for sure. I have plans on making some baked potato bags for my work friends – that is next on my list!
I don’t tend to sew for Christmas. Love your tutorial and giveaway.
I am working on 2 quilts for Christmas and a Christmas tree skirt.
So clever to make camera bags, especially for those small ones to keep safely in a hand bag! Sun glasses cases are useful too. I’ve got plans to make a few table toppers for Christmas gifts for friends. Making personal gifts by hand is always so appreciated!
I am currently working on 2 quilts. One is just because I have lots of fabric to use, and I have a hand injury, and can only machine sew! I miss my knitting!
The other is a quilt for my son’s partner. She is a lovely young lady, who enjoys home made things, but doesn’t do crafts herself.
I haven’t started Christmas yet still sewing Graduation quilts.
What a handy tutorial. I bought a red case for my red camera and they both are sitting on my shelf. I have 5 niece quilts that I want to complete by Christmas and along the way finish up some other quilts on my to finish list.
I’m planing on making pot holders for Christmas this year. I’m trying to get another project finished so I can get them started.
So much nicer than store bought camera cases, Carole. The matching set makes it even better.
Thank you for the awesome tutorial! Camera cases are very handy and make a great Christmas gift.
Your cases are very cute, and can be used for so many things !!
Thanks for sharing. I am hoping to get quilts finished for 3 granddaughters, and one little bitty brand new grandson . Two of them are almost done so I may just be able to do it.
Merry Christmas !!
The camera bags are so much cuter than carrying around a big black bag…thanks for sharing how to make it!
Thanks for sharing your way to make camera cases, very helpful. I am working on a king size quilt. Trying to decide how to quilt it and need to do it in two pieces.
Thanks for giveaway.
It just so happens, I am wanting to make a camera case! This will certainly push me in the right direction! Thank you!
Great idea for Christmas gifts! Thanks for sharing your patterns and ideas! Currently working on a charity quilt for Breast Cancer auction. I will be following your blog and hope to start on Christmas gifts soon. Susan
I’m working on UFO’s and a Quilt of Valor with a friend.
Carole, Great job on your camera case tutorial. Very clever.
Great camera pouches, thanks for sharing! Love the Christmas in July, so much fun!
Great camera pouches! I am working on some Christmas in July gifts for my group!
Great ideas – thanks for the inspiration! I’m just trying to finish up some UFO’s….but I should be thinking about Christmas too 🙂
Thanks for the great tutorial and for linking up to Clever Chameleon. And I want to say an extra big big thank you for having an international giveaway….. us on the “other side” do notice when we are excluded over postage, and it feels bad. Especially for those of us who are often posting in the other direction.
Those bags/pouches are a great idea for a gift at any time of year. I’m still looking through all the blogs to see what to get started on for Christmas. I have a bag of Christmas fabric I bought at a yard sale, and I need to find something to use that up.
Thanks for all the great ideas!
Oh, my goodness! You sure make these camera cases look easy! I just might have to give them a try. I want to make some potholders and pouches for Christmas and just might include an eye glass case or two, too! Thanks for a chance at the giveaway. You are very generous.
This month I must sew the top for granddaughter’s quilt, remake a case for granddaughter’s ipad carrier, and try to weave a star block. I also have some charity work to do.
Love your cases.
Thank you
I have a quilt top for granddaughter, redo ipad case for another granddaughter, charity sewing, and a weaving project (QAL).
Thank you for patterns
I am working on sundresses for the granddaughters, still…..in between guild meeting, bee gatherings, sewing with the gals at assisted living, washing smelly fabric (load#4) and pressing and folding for 2nd time around. 🙂 The cases are darling!
I haven’t started any Christmas projects yet. This blog hop has helped me begin to think about Christmas presents.
nikilsend(at)outlook(dot)com
I just bought a used camera and I’m going to have t make the camera case for it. Thanks for the idea.
Great tutorial! I like the way the strap becomes the handle for the bags! Thanks for sharing! xx
There’s a Christmas QAL starting up next Wednesday that I plan on participating in and I have a book with a tree skirt with Polar Bear FPP in it I want to make. Right now I’m just finishing up a couple QAL’s before the next ones get going!
Thanks for sharing your camera bags. They are great.
I just made my list of things I need to make for Christmas. There are currently 10 things which I hope I will get done in time!
I’m working on an improv quilt that I’m calling “Families Belong Together”, in response to the crisis at the border.
Great job love the colors you picked. …I am doing table runners this year…Using up scraps….
I have far too many projects going on at present, but I’m enjoying every one…lol! Christmas fabrics are a category all their own, designed to bring smiles, memories , and peace!
A great camera case tutorial and my mind is thinking of so many other things that would fit inside also. This would be a great gift in a gift-so much better than a box or gift bag!
A wonderful, easy and creative way to make presents that are custom to a person. I have not started on my Christmas sewing/knitting yet, but I’m thinking I should start before Labor Day, which is quickly approaching. Thank you for sharing and participating in the blog hop!
I love that the camera straps become the carrying straps, too. Well done and thanks for linking up with the Tips and Tutorials Festival!
